"Just as we were finishing the [calf-slaying] Uncle Samuel Shackford drove up, bringing Aunt Anna (Uncle Charles' wife), Cousin Lucy Shackford (his daughter) and Isabel (Aunt Anna's daughter). Uncle Samuel Shackford is about 6 ft. and weights about 230 lbs., has dark hair, bright complexion, gray eyes; he is quite lively at times, but often seems to be depressed under the weight of some hidden care, and in consequence thereof is not a great talker. He is one in whose presence it is hard to feel altogether at ease."
On the next page of the diary, we learn that Samuel B Shackford lived 1 mile from his sister, Caroline Jenness (Shackford) Hayes and a few pages later we learn that Aunt Lydia (Samuel's wife) cared for Joseph W during a illness where he "found out the peculiar worth of Aunt Lydia's character" Joseph's health returns a few days later and he is able to hike up "Moat Mountain" with cousins.
